Costing
The rates shown are a guide, based on the rate per person sharing a double room, in standard
accommodation. This rate may vary at certain times of year, and additional supplements are often required at festive periods.
The meal plan differs with the various types of accommodation, and this will naturally affect the rate bracket.
Town hotels are generally bed only or bed and breakfast. Beach hotels vary from bed and breakfast through to all inclusive. Lodges and tented camps are full board, and many have an option for a package that includes game drives. Homestays often include drinks and activities, whilst self catered accommodation requires you to provide your own food and drink. Please look at the individual lodge/hotel description to see the relevant meal plan
Lodges
These are permanent structures, imaginatively designed and
furnished to blend in with the local environment with an emphasis on all natural local building materials, and occupy superlative sites within Kenya's National Parks and Reserves, Private Conservancies and ranches and Community ranch lands.
Standards vary from the rustic to the modern, from the simply appointed to the last word in luxury. Most lodges have less than 130 beds.
Tented Camps
For those looking for a change to hotel accommodation, the camping experience without the discomfort, the tented camp is the ideal option. Accommodation is usually in large, luxurious, insect-proof, walk in tents, that are most often permanently pitched on wooden and concrete bases.
They have en-suite bathrooms with supplied hot and cold running water, flush toilets and hot showers. Tented camps generally have permanent public areas and most have swimming pools.
Homestays
Here you stay in the personal homes of your hosts. This allows the visitor to enjoy these beautiful countries in luxury and privacy, with your own timetable and interests catered for by your hosts, who have a wealth of intimate knowledge of the country, its people and the wildlife.
Many of these homes are situated on the large ranches and farms, and a wide range of activities are provided.
Self Catering Lodges, Camps and Houses
These are fully furnished and equipped accommodations where you provide all your own food and drink.
There are usually staff to take care of you and often cooking can be undertaken as well. Generally bedding and all kitchen utensils, lighting and running water is provided. These places are booked on an exclusive basis.
Eco Rating
The Eco-rating scheme is a voluntary certification scheme that recognizes hotels, lodges, camps, bandas and bush homes for best practices (high quality, excellent or superior practices) in environmental conservation, sustainable resource utilization and socio-economic investment.
The scheme has three progressive levels of certification namely Bronze, Silver and Gold.
• Bronze Eco-rating is the entry level and demonstrates a facility’s awareness and commitment to environmental conservation, responsible resource use and socio-economic investment.
• Silver Eco-rating demonstrates a move towards excellence; awarded to facilities that have shown innovation in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socio-economic investment.
• Gold Eco-rating is an indicator that a facility has achieved superior and replicable levels of excellence in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socio-economic investment.
